What is Racing Simulator?

Ever have the feeling to drive a car in the track? Need for speed but afraid of accidents? Here, you can race among many others with the speed beyond the limits of everyday roads. Yes, as the name states, it's a racing simulator. It simulates real-life races into your screen right at your home where you can interact and feel as if you are really on the road without the fear of accidents or injuries. I’m sure many are familiar with racing games. There are many categories of racing games, but the one that is accepted worldwide is racing simulator games. It can be a motorsport or rally.

If you ask me what’s new about this we all know that already? Well, as we all know that every games are played with controllers. They are made in shapes with multiple buttons and joysticks to suit the use of both your hands and ten fingers, but have you thought or heard of controllers that resembles the real objects in your life? You guessed it. It’s wheels, gears and pedals. This is what makes it called as racing simulator. Below you can checkout my trimmed video as an example. It's not yet posted to YouTube only exclusive to my blog readers at the moment. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Subscribe to my YouTube channel to view the full video.

What is needed in Racing Simulator?

Depending on your needs, style and type of the race, the equipment can vary in many ways. These days, there are mainly 2 types of e-races for motorsport accepted and available worldwide, enclosed wheel racing and rally. Enclosed wheel being on the larger scale with more games, users and interests, thus having more competitions available online such as in Gran Turismo Sport. On the other hand, rally is based on people with particular interests which is a bit lower in number such as WRC. Between these 2 types of races, equipment are different in some ways due to the need of use in racing. Let's see what is needed in both types of races and what are their differences.

    Enclosed Wheel

  • Steering wheel - thin to thick, can have many buttons, can be non-round steering wheel
  • Paddle shift gear
  • Pedals
  • Sim racing cockpit

   Rally

  • Steering wheel - round steering wheel, mostly thin rubber coated type, less buttons for performance use (rapid turns)
  • Paddle shift gear
  • Pedals
  • Handbrake
  • Sim racing cockpit

These are all the very main and basic equipment you will need to start sim racing. As we can see both are very similar, but there are a few differences to be noted. First, the steering wheel is different where rally wheels are large, round, rubber coated with less to no buttons for the best performance in rapid twist and turns in the tracks. On the other hand, enclosed wheel cars may have round or non-round steering wheels like Formula 1 cars and smaller in diameter with face full of necessary buttons to use in certain situations when needed. Next is the big difference where rally cars need handbrake for drifting in tight hairpin corners, but enclosed wheel cars don't need one when racing in the track because sadly there is no drift for them. That doesn't mean that they don't have handbrakes, but it just isn't necessary for our sim racing setup, thus increasing the cost.

What else can you have for Racing Simulator?

Sim racing has many more extra equipment available to use along with the steering wheel bundles for extra realism and functionality. These extras do have some good effect on usage, but not for everyone, it all depends on personal taste and cost. Let's see the list down below.

  • Gloves - less sticky and less damage to wheel from sweat
  • Stick shift gear - to simulate cars with stick shift gears for extra fun
  • Handbrake - to simulate rally and drift cars
  • Speedometer - for extra visibility of speed and decoration
  • Gear change indicator lights - for extra visibility of gear lights and decoration

Summary

All in all, Sim Racing is a great fun. It simulates what you can't do or afraid to do in real life. To be honest, any real racers started from sim racing too, so maybe someday you might be the one on real tracks. Finally, I recommend you trying out the sim racing games with joysticks before you buy the wheels just so you know if you're spending on something you really prefer.
